GreenSpring Summer Music Institutes
GreenSpring Summer Music Institutes attract students from around the world for intensive music study. Two weeks of programming features focus areas including harp, choir, guitar, piano, strings (violin, viola, cello, bass) and chamber music. Programs are available in Richmond, Virginia and Frederick, Maryland!
Summer is the perfect time to be inspired by world-class faculty, hone practice and performance skills, and have a great time making music with new friends and fellow musicians! Multiple programs are available for students at all levels ages 8-18, from beginners to the most advanced. Options include half-day and full-day day camps, as well as overnight boarding options. For working parents, before and after childcare is available for younger students.
In its 28 year history, GreenSpring Summer Music Institutes have served more than a thousand talented young musicians from across the United States and around the globe.

These programs not only nurture musical ability, but provide the camaraderie of a summer camp experience where students form lasting friendships. The combination of outstanding faculty, a rich musical environment and the company of talented students makes for an exciting, memorable and rewarding summer experience.
ACADEMIC CLASSES
Music History
Each daily session explores Western music history in a broad fashion. The class provides an introduction to music of the Ancient, Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Impressionist and Modern periods. The course focuses on listening, but covers history, society, architecture and other art forms as well.
Music Theory
All students take a theory placement test to be placed appropriately in a beginner, intermediate, or advanced theory class. Students learn the language, terminology, and mechanics of music plus the fundamentals of sound, notation, intervals, chords, musical forms, and analysis.
Aural Skills/Ear Training
This class helps students develop a keener sense for listening to music, and is integrated with the music theory class. Each student learns to distinguish between different intervals, chords, scales, and more. Depending on theory placement, varying levels of melodic and rhythmic dictation exercises will be given.
WORKSHOPS & SEMINARS
Dalcroze Eurhythmics
Founded by Swiss music educator Emile Jaques Dalcroze, Eurhythmics is a unique approach to developing musicianship through movement, ear training and improvisation activities.
Conducting
Learn basic skills of conducting and leading an ensemble. Students will prepare a short score while conducting their peers. Students may also have an opportunity to conduct in the final performance.
Orchestral Skills
Students gain insights into orchestral playing from professional orchestral musicians and a symphony conductor during this informative session.
Introduction to Improvisation and Jazz for Classical Musicians
A brief lecture on the history of jazz. Students learn the basics of improvisation in this hands-on workshop.
Practical Seminar for the Music Student
This class provides guidance regarding careers in music, competitions and places to further musical study. Guest faculty include professors from conservatories and music schools.
The Gig Musician
A realistic exploration of the business aspects of a career in music, including its joys and its realities. Students learn marketing strategies, legal and tax aspects, and acquire other practical knowledge about the life of a professional musician.
Music Therapy Overview
Learn about the emerging field of music therapy. Exciting new research, applications and possibilities will be explored.
Efficient, Effective Practicing
Explore tips, tricks and techniques for efficient and effective practicing. "The habits of greatness" make all the difference. Year after year, students (and their teachers) say this seminar inspires the most profound growth.

Multiple Week Sessions
Each session is unique and when combined with the other sessions forms a cumulative, learning-rich experience. Registrants may sign up for one session, or sign up for multiple sessions for maximum benefit!

Full Day (Richmond or Maryland Session) - $750
Half Day (Richmond or Maryland Session) - $375
Room & Board: $200, Optional add on tour for Maryland week $175.
